Valchitran Gold Treasure
Valchitran Gold Treasure
The End of Bronze Age
The Valchitran gold treasure is considered the largest treasure known to Bulgarian archaeology. This precious treasure consists of 13 objects with a weight of 12.5 kg of 23-carat pure gold. The objects of the Valchitran treasure were used for ritual purposes by a Thracian ruler-priest in honour of God Dionysus. The small cups are skilfully designed to be upright only when they are filled with liquid. Other elements of the exquisite Valchitran treasure include a three-dimensional vessel that enables three different liquids to be dispensed in three different sections. According to archaeologists, the priest used the vessels to make predictions concerning various events. The delicate Valchitran golden treasure signifies the advanced technical culture of the Thracians.
The Valchitran golden treasure was found by a coincidence in a vineyard in the village of Valchitran in 1925. The treasure is dated to the very end of the second millennium BC.
